The Mile End “borough” in Montreal is a known primarily for two things: bohemians and bagels. But this kitschy ‘hood got a serious wake-up call last Thursday night, when Torontonian (we’re told this is the right term…) electropop trio Dragonette hit the quaint lil Cabaret du Mile-End and veritably destroyed it (and by “veritably”, we mean that some chairs and tables were displaced).
While a cabaret hall might seem like an odd venue choice for a group that played Lollapalooza and will open a sold-out Miike Snow show at Terminal 5 on October 6th, the intimacy of the room and the audience only strengthened Martina Sorbara‘s iron-fist-charisma-grip on the crowd (this isn’t as scary as it sounds … Martina is rather tiny …).
From the sing-a-long on “Easy” to the light banter and audience interaction during some technical difficulties, Dragonette’s set involved all the reasons to love a small show, without losing the raucous, dance-party vibe that makes Dragonette … well … Dragonette (the few handsy Quebecois on “prescription dance pills” might have had something to do with that as well).
Be sure to show these Canucks some serious love at Terminal 5 on 10/6, and check out their new EP, Mixin’ to Thrill, featuring top-notch remixes and previously unreleased tracks!
