Disclosure are an English electronic music duo, consisting of brothers Guy (born 25 May 1991) and Howard (born 11 May 1994) Lawrence. The siblings grew up in Reigate, Surrey. Their debut album Settle was released on 3 June 2013 through PMR.
ANDERSON .PAAK & THE FREE NATIONALS
Brandon Paak Anderson, better known by his stage name Anderson .Paak, is an American singer-songwriter, rapper, producer and virtuoso drummer. Anderson was born into a Black/Korean family in Oxnard, California in 1986.
Anderson .Paak’s first experience as a musician was performing as a drummer at his family’s church. Subsequently, he then began producing music from his bedroom as a teenager. While defining his own unique sound, Anderson worked as studio-musician-for-hire–amongst other jobs–ultimately landing a gig as the touring drummer for American Idol contestant, Haley Reinhart. While touring for Reinhart, Anderson released his debut album, O.B.E. Vol.1 in 2012 under the stage name “Breezy Lovejoy.” In late October of 2014, he released Venice, his first LP as “Anderson .Paak.” This successful album was released under the imprint OBE (Outer Body Experience), a record label founded by him and his Manager/Partner, Adrian Miller, in conjunction with Steel Wool Entertainment. As an independent artist, Anderson overcame the odds, ultimately being praised by Rolling Stone Magazine as “one of the most amazing vocalists in R&B today.”
Anderson .Paak is best known for his features on (8) out of (16) tracks on critically-acclaimed artist and world-renowned record producer, Dr. Dre’slatest Grammy nominated album‑Compton. An article from L.A. Weekly in October of 2015 proclaimed that Anderson .Paak had “stole[n] the spotlight” on Dr. Dre’s Compton, and that he is now poised and “ready for solo success.” His musical range and artistry is a unique blend of R&B, 70‘s Soul, Hip-Hop, EDM, Funk and Rock n’ Roll. ‑His recognizable vocal abilities deliver smoldering tones combined with uncommon gritty expressionism that is eortlessly blended into a straight-from-the-street-narrative rhyme style which steadily floats over the airy tracks. Anderson’s tenaciously composed melodies, intelligent lyrical songwriting abilities, witty ad-libs (“Yes Lawd!”) and clever hooks, pair perfectly with the production texture and extraterrestrial soundscapes.
Known as a musical savant, Anderson .Paak is also one-half of the Hip-Hop group NxWorries, alongside producer ”Knxwledge.” Their internationally recognized hit-single “Suede” was selected as one of NPR Music’s “Favorite Songs of 2015” and made the list of the ”Top Ten Songs Shared on Spotify” according to the New York Times.
The voice of today’s Hip-Hop and R&B scene is continually releasing new content as the primary vocalist on several notable projects, working with artists such as: Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, The Game, Tokimonsta, Vindata and Goldlink to name a few. In September of 2015, the Los Angeles | Chicago production duo of JP and Rich Gains, known as the Blended Babies, produced a project entitled The Anderson .Paak EP, a four-song release solely featuring Anderson, to the delight of many fans and the industry alike.
Always striving to be on-the-cutting-edge and forefront of innovation, Anderson .Paak and his band The Free Nationals were the first group to ever perform a live-recorded virtual reality concert for VRC (The Virtual Reality Company), which specializes in making VR technology for this new state-of-the-art entertainment medium. In addition to his musical and vocal prowess, the dynamic artist also created his very own‑web series‑entitled ANIMAL for Mass Appeal’s YouTube channel featuring top artists like‑ Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes, The Gameand more in October of 2015.
On January 15, 2016, Anderson .Paak will release his latest solo album entitled MALIBU, under the OBE, Steel Wool Entertainment and ArtClub International imprints. Featured artists include ScHoolBoy Q, Talib Kweli, The Game, Rapsody and BJ the Chicago Kid with production from Madlib, 9th Wonder, Kaytranada, Hi-Tek, Pomo, Callum Connor and The Free Nationals.
Prodigy, Havoc, Killa Black (Havoc’s older brother), Big Noyd, The Twins (Gambino and Scarface), Ty Nitty, Godfather Pt. III, Ty Maxx, Yambo, Gotti, Money No, Karate Joe, Stovo, and Littles all grew up
Havoc & Prodigy started rhyming in the late 1980s when the duo met at the High School of Art and Design in New York City. Havoc took the role of producer and secondary MC, while Prodigy assumed the position of primary M.C. Originally dubbing themselves the Poetical Profits, the duo later changed its name to Mobb Deep in order to “reflect their reputation on the streets.” In the group’s early career, it released the single “Cop Hell.” While members of the clique were only 17, the released its debut
album Juvenile Hell, which was led by the single “Peer Pressure.” The album sold very poorly and was met with harsh reviews that wrote the duo off as just another hardcore group with little to distinguish them from the rest of the hip-hop world—especially with the group legal—despite production by DJ Premier and Large Professor. However, a few songs from Juvenile Hell gained a little recognition, such as “Hit It from the Back,” “Locked in Spofford,” and “Me and My Crew.” Also in 1993, Havoc had a guest appearance in the critically acclaimed Black Moon album Enta Da Stage, on a song called “U Da Man.”
Rise to success
While still at a young age, the duo catapulted itself to the top of the hardcore hip-hop scene through its straightforward narration of street life. As with their first lyrical production, Mobb Deep portrayed the struggles of living in New York City’s Queensbridge Houses. Following its release, The Infamous became one of the most influential hip-hop albums of the East Coast hardcore hip-hop genre. The duo’s production also was noticed as the beats were often hard- hitting and direct, a testament to Havoc, who produced the duo’s tracks almost exclusively throughout their careers. Furthermore, the smash hit single “Shook Ones Pt. II” received criticalacclaim and was well-received within the hip hop community. Its third album, Hell on Earth was released in 1996, debuting at number six on the Billboard album chart. The album continued the duo’s portrayal of harsh street life, while further pushing them to the forefront of the hardcore hip-hop scene, along with contemporary East Coast emcees such as The Notorious B.I.G., Wu- Tang Clan collective, Jay-Z, and fellow Queensbridge associate Nas.
In 1998, the duo collaborated with reggae dancehall rapper Bounty Killer on the track “Deadly Zone” for the soundtrack to Blade. In 1999, they released the highly anticipated Murda Muzik album. Despite extensive bootlegging (nearly thirty songs of unreleased material leaked onto the Internet) and countless delays, the album debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and quickly received platinumcertification—further highlighted by the popular single “Quiet Storm.”
Shortly afterward, Prodigy released his long-awaited solo album H.N.I.C., in which the emcee collaborated with other artists (B.G., N.O.R.E.) and producers (including The Alchemist, Rockwilder, and Just Blaze). Shortly after the release of Murda Muzik, Jay-Z spoke out against the duo, leading to an increase in publicity. Rumor has it that Prodigy took issue with two Jay-Z lines that he felt were subliminal shots at Mobb Deep. One line from Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter states, “How dare you look at Jigga like I’m shook like boo,” which he interpreted as a reference to “Shook Ones Pt. II.” These remarks were compounded with a line from another one of Jay-Z’s albums, Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life: “What the
deal is? (huh?)/Its like New York’s been soft Ever since snoop came through and crushed the buildings,” which Prodigy felt referenced Mobb Deep’s beef with Tupac Shakur, Snoop, and Death Row Records. Later, at the Hot 97 Summer Jam show of 2001, Jay-Z performed “Takeover,” which attacked Prodigy and was later re-recorded for his album The Blueprint. He also revealed photographs of a young Prodigy dressed up like Michael Jackson in 1983, although Jay-Z claimed it was 1988.
Mobb Deep subsequently released Infamy in 2001. The song “Burn” (featuring Vita) was perceived as a response to Jay-Z’s diss on The Blueprint and “Crawlin'” Where Prodigy’s two verses both mention Jay-Z. The album marked a major stylistic change that in which the duo moved away from the raw, minimalist, stripped-down beats of their hardcore roots toward more commercial fare with such songs as “Hey Luv (Anything).” This transition fostered accusations of “selling out” — upsetting many long-time fans who did not wish to see them veer away from the duo’s original style.
Although these stylistic adjustments opened up Mobb Deep to a wider audience, many critics and fans credit Prodigy’s feud with Jay-Z as damaging to Mobb Deep’s gangsta image and record
sales (most evident when comparing the platinum-selling Murda Muzik to Infamy, which struggled to attain gold-record status). There were no retaliation dis records back from these emcees. In 2003, the group split with Loud Records and released Free Agents: The Murda Mix Tape, in which they proclaimed themselves as “free agents” and addressed the group’s split with its old label and its
search for a new label. Jive Records signed the duo later in the year through a deal with the group’s own imprint and subsequently released Amerikaz Nightmare in 2004, which was seen by the general hip-hop audience as a weaker release by the duo, resulting in poor sales and the group’s subsequent departure from the label. Today, as a result of various mergers, all of Mobb Deep’s studio albums from 1995-2004 are owned by Sony Music Entertainment.
In June 2005, Prodigy and Havoc announced that Mobb Deep had signed with 50 Cent’s label G-Unit Records. 50 Cent had a connection to the duo, as he grew up in Queens and also had used Havoc as a producer for several different beats for G-Unit’s, Lloyd Banks’ and Tony Yayo’s albums. Mobb Deep’s album, titled Blood Money, was released on May 2, 2006. It features G-Unit members 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, and Young Buck, as well as Mary J. Blige and Nate Dogg. On November 3, 2006, Mobb Deep became the first ever American hip-hop duo to perform in India, via VH1’s Hip Hop Hustle.
On the 20th Anniversary of the classic album “The Infamous,” Mobb Deep released their eighth studio album in April 2014. “The Infamous Mobb Deep” was released as a Deluxe Package that also included the critically acclaimed “The Infamous Sessions,” a collection of unreleased tracks recorded during the original album’s recording sessions in 1994; “The Infamous Sessions” feature unreleased verses by Nas, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah.
2015 was a huge touring year for Mobb Deep: the duo took the live show to sold out venues across the world.
As the 20th Anniversary of yet another classic album, Murda Musik, approaches, Prodigy and Havoc are still consistently on the road while keeping their focus on upcoming projects. Havoc will soon release a solo album, as he continues to raise his profile as a producer (Kanye West’s 2016 single “Real Friends” was co-produced by Havoc.) Prodigy is still helming his indi label, Infamous Records ; he is also in the process of releasing two new books via his own publishing company Infamous Books; the first book, Commissary Kitchen, is a “prison food” cookbook. The second title, The State vs. Albert “Prodigy” Johnson, is a chronological journey across the challenges he faced upon his return home after three and a half years spent in a state prison. Dusky are London production duo Nick Harriman and Alfie Granger-Howell. In just three years, the fast-rising duo have asserted themselves as leaders of the UK underground. BBC Essential Mix of the Year contenders, DJ Magazine cover stars, headliners everywhere from Berlin’s Panorama Bar to London’s
Fabric, Dusky’s story so far is one of constant forward motion and a uniquely universal appeal.
The Dusky story began back in 2011, with the birth of their new alias on the beautifully diverse ‘Stick By This’ LP – an album that quickly found a vocal champion in Radio 1’s Pete Tong. But the duo’s breakthrough track was undoubtedly 2012’s killer ‘Flo Jam’. Signed by the label that broke Maya Jane Coles (Dogmatik), its devastating deep grooves were hammered by everyone
from Loefah, Joy Orbison and Boddika to Disclosure, Jamie Jones and Sasha, with even Calvin Harris getting in on the act. An underground anthem that crossed over many barriers, it eventually earned the unexpected accolade of iTunes Dance Single Of The Year.
Since those formative releases marked them out as talents destined for the top, Dusky have pushed their sound forward every step of the way – refusing to stay stationary and acknowledge the status quo. There have been rugged warehouse techno excursions on Loefah’s School, quirky scene-defining house bangers on Aus and classy melodic grooves like ‘Mr Man’ on Anjunadeep. But whatever musical sub-strain Dusky turn their hands to, there
is always a strong common thread – a signature depth and detailing. A stamp of quality, that makes for an instantly recognisable ‘Dusky’ sound.
Now with the launch of their 17 Steps label, the duo are taking control of this unique identity and giving it the unrestricted platform it deserves.
The eclectic, well-honed outlook is the result of absorbing two decades of global dance music, digging back beyond and a shared production career that has spanned nearly 10 years. Sift through Nick and Alfie’s personal record collections and you will find everything from Polish orchestral music and Ahmad Jamal’s soulful jazz, to Justin Martin’s “Sad Piano” and Daft Punk’s
formative French house, with stacks of vintage garage and drum & bass 12″s propping the whole selection up.
With all these influences and so much more bleeding into the current Dusky studio alchemies, the journey is just beginning for the London duo.
Launching his music career from his freshman dorm room, the Los Angeles-based 22-year-old producer/DJ, Justin Jay, has already seen success that extends well beyond his years, but he is surely not resting on any laurels as he further refines his expertise as a true artist. As the youngest member of the dirtybird family, Justin has seen support by the likes of Claude VonStroke, Jamie Jones, Disclosure, Tiga, and George Fitzgerald, among many others, while also being recognized as a “Future Star” by trusted tastemakers, such as Pete Tong, and fans alike. At the heart of his music, Justin Jay manifests his soul, funk, and jazz roots in a nostalgic, yet forward-thinking manner that yields his unmistakable brand of house music, which has won him releases on labels such as dirtybird, Culprit, Southern Fried Records, & Pets Recordings. His productions have also put him in the spotlight on club and festival stages across the globe, from LA’s HARD Summer to the dirtybird residency at Sankeys Ibiza, where he held crowds in his grasp, taking fans on a rollercoaster of energy and music ranging from deep house to breakbeat to techno.
